BOREDK Spotlight (project) & UX Design

Fall 2023

BOREDK Spotlight was a main project that I led and contributed to during a 4-month internship at Danske Bank, within the Buying & Owning Real Estate Denmark Tribe (BOREDK), alongside other side projects/tasks.

First, let’s talk about “CONFLUENCE”!

“Confluence” at Danske Bank is their internal documentation and collaboration platform used by developers and other teams for sharing information and coordinating efforts. It serves as a hub with necessary information regarding HR administrative work, as well as Tribe, Squad, and Chapter information, along with a lot of other useful information!

Project overview

The idea for this project originated from one of the senior developers who was seeking a platform to showcase the level of effort and collaboration between developers and designers to management and business analysts. He believed that while “Confluence” is an essential tool, it is not user-friendly and often contains outdated information. Therefore, he suggested that, as a UX Designer Intern, I team up with another Developer intern to create a platform that would showcase existing and upcoming projects or features within the BOREDK Tribe, with a specific focus on the tasks and responsibilities of developers and designers within the tribe and their collaboration.

Target Audience: Developers, Designers, Business Analysts, Advisors, Chapter Leads, Product Owners, Tribe Management.

What is the problem?

“Confluence” is a platform for maintaining, sharing, and collaborating on documentation and information related to all services and products. However, it carries a lot of information, which makes it difficult to navigate, especially for designers and developers. There aren't many opportunities to show on their current tasks and responsibilities or their collaboration on different projects. Additionally, its user interface is not attractive. There is also a significant amount of outdated information, which can sometimes confuse users about whether they can trust it or not.

What is the solution (goal)?

Develop an intuitive and user-friendly platform to showcase the existing and upcoming digital projects or features within the BOREDK Tribe. This platform would serve as a project portfolio where tribe members, management, and other internal stakeholders could easily track recent updates and newly released features.

First Step

In the first step, I tried to explore “Confluence” as much as possible in order to understand it better. Then, I needed to identify the challenges and enablers to create the project timeline and divide the tasks and responsibilities between myself and my teammate, the intern developer! :)

Challenges

  • Time limit (9 weeks only)

  • Resources (one designer and one developer)

  • ”Confluence” (the main competitor!)

Enablers

  • Design chapter & two senior developer support

  • Lots of passion and enthusiasm!

Project Timeline

Research

Objective: Analyzing how I can create value for everyone on this platform and gather in-depth insights about their experiences, needs, motivations, and behavior, as well as exploring opportunities and new ideas.

Participants: 8 participants from various roles within the BOREDK Tribe were invited.

Methodology: (Considering the time limit): Qualitative - User interview (Generative Interview) with open-ended questions

Findings

Finding 1: Different roles had their own needs and preferences. Based on the interviews, Business Analysts were more interested in knowing about projects running in other squads and the teams working on them. Chapter leads wanted more focus on HR responsibilities, while Developers were asking for access to project codes, especially if they were not within their own squad. Designers were looking for a platform friendlier than Figma, where they could easily share their design work.

Finding 2: Participants emphasized the need for an intuitive design and a nicer user interface with easier navigation. They preferred less text but wanted recent and updated information.

Finding 3: There was a demand for simple and clear Squad information, such as squad name, Product Owner, team members, assigned tasks, and current initiatives they were working on.

Workshop

After conducting the user research and analyzing the gathered data, I facilitated a workshop with the design team to share the results and engage in brainstorming for ideation and design.

Decision Tree

At this point, I drew the Decision Tree to visualize the various paths users can take within this platform, optimizing user flows and creating intuitive and user-friendly interfaces.

Design

Considering the timeline and the workload for my teammate, the Developer intern, we decided to primarily focus on two pages to ensure there was enough time for my colleague to code and implement my design. Additionally, it was suggested that I only focus on the desktop screen.

Mission accomplished

The final project was presented and delivered to the Product Owner, Design and BA Chapter leads, and senior developers. Very good feedback was collected, and it was suggested that this project has the potential to be expanded to other tribes at Danske Bank.
